Dear Juliet,

I can’t believe that I am writing you this letter on your first birthday.  I can’t believe it’s been that long.  I’ve seen your little cousins learn to sit on their own, crawl, and start to walk.  I’ve seen them turn 1 and can’t help but be a little jealous.  I can’t help but think I should be preparing for your first birthday party right now.

But I”m not.

Instead I’m writing you a letter because it’s therapeutic to me.  Because I can’t hug you or sing to you or give you a kiss  This is all I have, so I’ll take it.  I want you to know that although it’s been 1 year, we haven’t even begun to forget you.  Your brother and sister talk about you all the time.  Tate thinks it’s pretty special that we have someone in our family that’s already gotten to meet Jesus.

and it is.  You are the lucky one.  You win.  Throughout your short little life baby girl you have taught us so much.  You have taught us to live each day to the fullest…

to celebrate each moment..

you taught us take each moment captive.

and revel in the little things.

You taught us what true beauty is.

and we learned it has nothing to do with what the world teaches us.

But most importantly little lady, you taught us how to trust in God.  And allowed us to see that this is not our home.  You allowed us to look at the eternal.

14 For this world is not our home; we are looking forward to our city in heaven, which is yet to come. 15 With Jesus’ help, let us continually offer our sacrifice of praise to God by proclaiming the glory of his name.

Hebrews 13:14-15

and that brought us hope.  Such hope.

Hope that we will see you again.

Hope that our troubles are temporary.

Hope that you are just waiting for us in the midst of our Savior.

Hope that you are no longer in pain or suffering.

And we are SO GRATEFUL because we experienced God in ways we never have before.  We experienced Him through the body of Christ that carried us when we couldn’t go on.  We experienced Him through the indescribable peace He gave us through our journey.  We experienced Him when he met us at our darkest moments and showed us He cared.

So baby girl, although your life was short, it taught us so much.  I hope you can see that now.  I can’t wait to get up there with you and see how God turned something that this world called broken and useless, and turned it into something eternal and miraculous.  You are so special Jules.  And although I would give anything to hold you again, I feel honored that I got to be your mom.  That I got to be a part of a bigger plan.  Thank you for that.

We love you, happy first birthday Ju Ju!

  1. I was actually looking for kitchen inspiration pictures because my wife and I are re-doing our kitchen. First off, we love your style and design choices and plan to fully copy them;)

More importantly, I have been really inspired by the story of your little girl that went to be with our LORD. Thanks for sharing her with the world, and allowing God to use you to help others. She is a beautiful little girl and a miracle indeed.

I hope you and your husband are doing well. I’ve heard before that the death of a child can seriously injure a marriage. May God continue to give you both strength, and love for one another that will stand against every test.

    1. Justin, thanks so much for your sweet comment, and I’m honored that you would want to copy my kitchen:) And thanks for the sweet comment about our baby girl…she was and is such a blessing still. Thanks for the prayers!!

  2. Theresa Price (London, England)

Allie I came across your page by accident, I was searching for a nice birthday picture for my Aunt Juliette, and your little Juliet’s face came up on the search, and was so beautiful I couldn’t help but click through to find out who she was. Then suddenly I was reading your heartwarming story from the other side of the world, and crying for your loss, whilst at the same time feeling uplifted by your faith and peace.

Just wanted you to know that your story touches more people than you might imagine. I’ve spent my evening finding out about Trisomy 18, and counting my many blessings including my own three beautiful children. Oh and your decorating’s pretty darned good too :)

    God bless you.

    1. Theresa, thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment, it means so much. And for reading about my sweet girl, which means even more:) I’m blown away that she’s got fans across the ocean. Pretty special girl she is:):) xoxo

  3. I couldn’t even make it through the entire slide show. It.was.beautiful…..and very emotional. What a wonderful tribute to your precious daughter. Thank you so much for sharing.

  4. I lost my son almost five years ago due to still birth. I feel exactly the same way that you do, so proud to be his mom and so thankful to have had him be a part of our lives. It is so good to hear someone else have a positive outlook on such a difficult life experience.

  5. Happy 1st Birthday, Baby Jules! No better place to celebrate than with Jesus and the Angels!

Love and prayers to your family…
And as I’ve said to my (angel) son 7 years in a row…

Hugs & kisses & birthday wishes…sent to you in Heaven above!

  6. I LOVE seeing her sweet little face again!! Thinking of you all today! God’s grace will be sufficient for you! Our girls STILL thank Jesus that Jules is in heaven! :)

  7. Beautiful! My twin boys were born at 21 weeks. Mark was stillborn and Sam lived for a hour and 9 minutes. They have been in Heaven for almost 8 years now…you will NEVER forget!!! Praying for you today as you remember and celebrate the day she came into this world. I will also be praying for you in the weeks to come as you remember her days here on earth with you and then remember and celebrate the day she went to be with Jesus in her eternal Heavenly home!

  8. I’ll never forget the day she was born and getting a text with a picture of her beautiful face (I still have it) and the message that she had been born AND had breath in her lungs and life in her body. We had relentlessly prayed for that to happen and I was overwhelmed with gratitude. She will always be so special to us, a sweet little person that God used to teach a thousand lessons without ever saying a word. You and Ryan have been amazing stewards of the gift she was and continues to be. I love you sweet friend. xoxoxo
