A Study on Revelation

Studying Revelation

When I was younger, and actually up until probably a few years ago, I was afraid of the book of Revelation.  It sounded scary, it seemed hard to understand, and there was always too much controversy over it.  And honestly, I felt like it was a book that many people dismissed because of those various reasons.  I feel like the church has mostly shied away from it and people don't choose to talk about it.  Well, living through the last couple years I have become more intrigued about the book because of the way the world is so rapidly changing before our eyes.  It was at this time that a friend recommended this commentary about the book of Revelation.  I ordered it thinking it would probably still be too difficult of a book to understand, but to my surprise, David Pawson was the easiest author to read and broke the book down in such a way that I couldn't get enough! I read through Revelation and then would read the corresponding chapters in this book, and it totally changed my mind set on Revelation from one of fear to one of hope!  Knowing it did that for me, I want to encourage you if you've ever been curious but always confused, to check out this book and lets go through it together!

Our small group recently started going through Revelation as well, and we found that David Pawson has a video series on it.  It is very similar to the book but even easier to listen to.  Ryan and I just listened to this first episode and already are blown away by what we have learned.  We watched it on double speed so it was only 45 minutes and could still easily understand all of it.  A few key points that Pawson said that I thought were powerful are these:

  • This is the only book of the Bible that gives a blessing to those who read it and a curse to those who add or take away from it.
  • It's the only letters we have that are written by Jesus himself through a man.
  • Revelation was written to 7 churches that were filled with mostly servants, slaves, and low-class people, so in other words, ordinary people.  Which in turn means that you don't need a Bible degree or a title in your name to understand it.  It was written to the lay person, and we shouldn't feel intimidated to study it.
  • It is the persecuted church's favorite book of the Bible because they understand the best that this world is not our home, and that Jesus is going to be coming back one day on a white horse to rid the world of Satan forever and judge the evil.  It brings HOPE to so many and shouldn't scare us!

After Ryan and I listened to the first part of David Pawson's YouTube series, we decided that we really wanted to listen to this as a family.  We were so very encouraged and felt that we want to prepare our kids to have hearts that yearn for heaven, that aren't afraid of what Christ's return will look like, and to understand without a doubt that death has no grip on us, and eternity is real!  So, if you have been wanting to dig into this book a little more, I'd love for you to join our family.  We are only going to be doing 1 part every two weeks so we will be going at a slow pace.  I'm hoping to be able to throw up question boxes on IG and then do lives or blog about what we are learning as we go! God says you will be blessed by reading this book! So let's take that challenge and learn together!

Ps.  Another great tip David had was to read Revelation out loud.  He actually said whenever you read the Bible try to read it out loud because you have to think about what you are reading when you add tone and inflection, and it makes it that much more real.  I can't say I can always read the Bible out loud, but we are going to read Revelation out loud.

Also, I know some people get stuck on the book of Revelation because they want to know about the rapture and if we are here for the tribulation and witness most of the book of Revelation, or if we are gone before.  Pawson never really states his view, but he just helps you to understand the whole book.  I actually don't get caught up in pre-trib, mid-trib or post-trib, because I guess I want my heart to prepared for what's to come no matter what that looks like.  God obviously hasn't saved tons and tons of martyrs from death. That's not His goal. He wants to know we will be obedient, even unto death.  That's my goal.  And I also think how much more motivated I am to share the gospel knowing what's to come and bring as many people to heaven as we possibly can.

On that note, I read the whole book and there was not one part of his theology that I disagreed with.  If I did, I would have a hard time promoting it:)

So what do you say? Are you in?!?
