FEATURED ON CITY FARMHOUSE– AN UPDATED HOUSE TOUR

You guys!!  Today is a big day, or a surreal day actually.  Jen, from the blog City Farmhouse is featuring my house on her website.  Can you say blown away??  After all, her house has been featured in Cottages and Bungalows and Better Homes and Gardens.  Her house is beautiful but her heart proves to be even more sweet:)  Thanks so much for this opportunity Jen!  So here’s the post that is on her site…

Hello City Farmhouse readers.  I am so beyond honored to be here and so grateful for Jen for this opportunity!  I’m Allie, from Proverbs31girl, and I am so excited to be able to share our sweet little farmhouse with you. Unlike Jen whose on the water (so jealous!) we sit on a quaint three acre old farmstead in the heart of Minnesota.  We actually bought the place on a real estate auction (most stressful day of my life!) and have been working on it the last four years to bring this 100 year-old-farmhouse back to it’s glory!  I would say my style is modern farmhouse, but I’ll let you decide for yourself.  So if you’d like to join me, I’d love to show you around.

Here’s a little idea of our setting.  It’s very much a classic farmhouse with white siding and black shutters.  We have slowly been updating the landscaping as well.

And now lets go inside.

Our biggest transformation in the house was the kitchen, which is the room you walk into as you enter that front door.  Check out my blog if you want to see the before pictures.  The biggest changes we made were blowing out walls to open up the space and put in a large open staircase which became the focal point in our house.

The name of the game on this complete house gut, was BUDGET :)  So although we needed to start this kitchen from scratch, we actually got these cabinets for FREE from a lady my mother-in-law worked for.  Such a blessing!  They used to be cherry and we painted them Sharkey Gray by Martha Stewart.

IMG_4019

I loved that we could fit an eat in kitchen in this area, as well as a small island.  If there’s one thing that’s not so great about old houses is the storage, so we need to make the most of every single space.

IMG_4027

One of my favorite DIY’s I did was this command center to the right of the fridge.  It’s the perfect spot to keep the laptop, and also helps to keep bills organized, along with our weeks activities.

IMG_4029

On the opposite side of this wall is our dining room…

IMG_5063

There actually wasn’t a formal dining room in the house when we bought it, so we pushed back a wall and created one.

IMG_5048 IMG_5050

I recently just added the floor to ceiling board and batten, and am loving how crisp and fresh it is in here now.  If you haven’t figured it out by now, I’m a sucker for neutrals.  You won’t see too much color in here.

IMG_5054

IMG_5057

I’m also a sucker for cheap DIY’s, which is why I had fun giving this $10 dresser a complete makeover and turned it into a buffet.

IMG_5077

and off of the dining room is where we have  a formal sitting area with fireplace.

IMG_5070

This is the room that you can usually find me.

IMG_5067

in this chair actually….

IMG_5068

I love how the fireplace is central to the whole house.  You can see it from just about everywhere.

IMG_5082

and off of this room is the living room.

IMG_5096

and this is usually where you will find the kiddos:)

IMG_5106

I’m working toward having this whole house planked:)  That would be my perfect end result…it just takes time:)

Upstairs is our master bedroom.

IMG_4300

In a small house, this room seems a bit ridiculous, but hey, I’ll take it:)  This was an addition the previous owners had done, although when we bought it, it was broken up with a walk in closet on the left side of the room and more closets over there as well.  It also only had 7 1/2 foot ceilings, which we raised to 10 1/2 feet since it was just open attic space above.

IMG_4334

IMG_4317

Our room has also doubled as a nursery lately…

IMG_4318

so it’s been nice to have the space.

IMG_4324

we moved the closets to the other side of the room.

IMG_4302

and also moved the laundry from the main floor bathroom, to up here.

IMG_4675

IMG_4652

it also doubled as a closet for our little guy:)

IMG_4664

like I said before, we have to make use of every inch of space :)

IMG_4663

IMG_4669

our bedroom opens to the shared bathroom upstairs.  Although I’d love my own, I’m grateful we have an entry:)

IMG_4306

IMG_3711

We turned this $5 dresser into a vanity.

IMG_3706

and added more planks.  Seriously, you can never have enough! :)

IMG_4695

And the most recent redo was my little ladies room.

IMG_5004

I had so much fun making this space for her!

IMG_5007

and that’s it for the tour.  There’s always projects I’m working on, so head over anytime you want to catch up!

I thought I would also give you a quick glimpse of some of the other buildings on our property that we’ve been having fun renovating.

We have an old barn we use as an occasional shop where we sell repurposed good and home items four times a year.

This is a work in progress, but I assure you, it will be worth the wait!

  1. Allie!!! I’m late to the game, but having actually been IN your house I am so glad to see this feature! You are so very talented, and Kynlee’s room turned out AMAZING. What an eye you have, girl! Loved this, and congrats. :)

  2. Laura Bissonnette

What color did you use as your primary wall color? Also, what color did you use for your kitchen cabinets? So lovely!

    1. Thanks Laura, I used Glass of Milk by Martha Stewart in my living area and Martha Stewart Sharkey Gray on the cabinets. The kitchen walls are Martha Stewart Gull:) Hope that helps!

  3. Congratulations on being featured! Your entire property is so beautiful! What do you do for storage of baby gear, off season kids clothes, etc? Do you have a basement that you can use for storage? We are on the verge of buying a house we love, but every inch of it is finished, so there is no storage for the extra stuff 4 kids have :) Looking for creative ways to work around that!!!

    1. Haha…oh man, storage is my nemesis in this house! We only have a cellar for a basement that I’m not about to put kid stuff in:) we have two huge pole sheds on the property and we tub everything up and haul it out. Honestly it’s super annoying, but there’s not much else to do!:). It’s still worth it to me to get the character!:). Best of luck!

  4. Love, love, love your entire house!! So welcoming and tasteful. The white chair covers are exactly what I’ve been looking for. May I ask, where you purchased them?

  5. Came here from the blog & love your style! I just did this similar renovation but in Texas!
I am curious about your cafe stripes curtains in the kitchen. I have the full Length in my living room & love those!!
    Great job! Beautiful!

  6. Your house is amazing! You are so talented! I love the farmhouse style, it just looks so clean and cozy :)
I would love to know where you got the paned mirrors in your dining room.

  7. Allie, such an inspiration of creativity you are! Warmest Congrats on your feature–super exciting & very well deserving! Eva
